Pathway Parents Association

Meeting of January 9, 2001

MINUTES

Minutes: Minutes from the previous meeting were approved.

Pathway President's Report: Sue Harrop resigned, effective Thursday, Jan.

11, 2001. Craig Waltman will continue working in the area of Advancement

and the school will wait to determine what the needs are before hiring

someone to replace Sue.

Proposals were received from 6-7 consultants for the feasibility study for

the endowments. Two were asked to submit more detailed proposals. The

leading candidate is Rosemary Mc Donough. She is experienced with doing

development for schools and has a broad base of experience. Pathway might

receive some benefits by using Rosemary in that she may be available to

provide some mentoring through out the entire processs. The Endowment

Committee will meet with Rosemary on Friday, Jan . 12 if reference checks

turn out positive.

We learned from all of the candidates that the campaign should be broad

based and should include advancement, capital needs and immediate program

needs. The main focus will be advancement.

There is a $100,000 proposal from WW Smith Foundation to rehabilitate the

Thomas Jefferson Residence so it has the capacity to be co-ed.

Two candidates have been identified in the nursing search. One is external

and one internal. The nursing coordinator will be a working nurse and a

supervisor role.

Bill wanted the PPA to be aware of Carol Weeks, who is a very strong

component of the nursing staff, She works from 5-9 each weekday evening and

services the residential students.

Jack Foy will be beginning an environmental studies program as a result of

the Child Development Foundation Grant.

The Fund raising dinner at Bart Blatstein's will be on March 30, 2001. Bill

wanted to be sure that all contributors to the school, in terms of time,

energy, or money are valuable, respected and appreciated.

The vacation Raffle which was not done the past two years, but had been done

the 7 years prior to that is up and going again. Suggestions were made to

establish a wish list that people could contribute toward, such as a stay at

a Bed & Breakfast, Theatre tickets, etc.

Parents have recommended that Ms. Pfeiffer, who is in charge of the

apartment program in the residential area have a voice mail so parents can

get messages to her.

The school is looking for an additional home to lease or buy for the

residential program.

Treasurer's Report: $5,000 is in a 9 month CD. There is approximately

$5,000 in the current treasury.

PPA President's Report: PPA received a thank you from Buzz Johnson for the

donation to the school in his name.

Lisa Murray, an elementary teacher in the George Washington building is

leaving. A letter is being sent to set up a meeting with the parents of the

students in this building, Bob Schwartz and Paul Hunter.

Bob will also be meeting with parents who are concerned about insufficient

academics for their child.

Doug Vogel, from SNAP, sent a card to Lisa using an artist with

developmental disabilities. You can get more information about this at:

Special Reports

Membership: 102 members

Ways & Means: Family Fun Day is Jan. 20. There is concern that there will

not be enough participation. Help setting up on Friday, after 3 p.m. would

be appreciated.

Programs: A representative from MHMR (Mental Health/Mental Retardation)

will be speaking on January 24, 2001.

In February Dr. Mitolski, head of Transition at Montgomery County

Intermediate Unit will discuss what makes a good transition plan.

On March 7we hope to have a speaker on financial issues

In May we may have a Life After Pathway discussion. The date is open for

this and a weekend date is being considered.

Newsletter: Jan letter will be out soon.

Networking Task Force: Erin Ross met with only a few people who attended

the last meeting. The school understands the need for transition from

Pathway, but is not able to supply this to parents. This seems to be mostly

a budget issue. In order for the school to fund personnel to do this they

would have to give up another position in the school. It seems important

that parents let Bob Schwartz know that this should be a priority in budget

discussions.
